One of the great artists from the end of the twentieth century, Mateo Vilagrasa, was preparing for his great and final exhibition, trying to vindicate once and for all the sense of his work. After suffering an accident that left him tetraplegic in 2006, Vilagrasa gives himself body and soul in the understanding and reflection of his work, which he contemplates and orders, unable to paint anymore, through a computer. While, sat in a chair, he continues to reflect on what his paintings have meant to him, philosophising and pondering the meaning of life, art, truth and solitude.

Mateo Vilagrasa and his obsession with life
Fate changes the course of the documentary
On 16th of November 2018, Mateo Vilagrasa died at the age 74. Suddenly, the documentary that was going to vindicate his name and legacy, and transcend his doubts and reflections from the artist to the audience, becomes a posthumous work of the artist.
The piece undergoes a metamorphosis, and ends up becoming a testament to Vilagrasa’s life and death, resuming filming six months after his death. Viatge D’hivern, thus, becomes a dialogue between Ana Sanmartí, director of the documentary, who tries to discover who Mateo Vilagrasa really was, and the artist himself, who expresses himself through memories, old tapes, and his inner circle, who are trying to honour his memory.
The Documentary
After the unexpected changes in the course of its filming, Viatge D’hivern became a 70 minute documentary that was released on Monday 9th December 2019 in the cinemas of Girona.
